Spring Has Sprung
Spring is such a wonderful time of the year.  The days are longer which means more sunshine to nap in.  The grass is turning green and flowers are blooming.  The smell of the flowers blooming and the new grass growing can be inebriating. I feel like a young pup when I take a good roll in the grass.  Springtime is also a great time of year to work in the garden.  I recommend that all Schipperkes get out and work in their gardens and dig up the bones they planted last year.  I found that bones which have been planted through at least two seasons have a certain savory flavor that can’t be beat in a good chew.  If you haven’t planted bones make sure you try it this year.  I promise you won’t be disappointed.  One more thing about bones before I move on…..  Have any of you had an antler to chew on yet?  They are great.  We bought some Elk antlers at the last dog show.  The flavor and chew quality was excellent.  However, these antlers are a bit pricey.  My neighbor is a big hunter and he brought over some White Tail Deer antlers the other day.  They are a tasty treat that is safe to chew.  Check it out if there are hunters in your family they may part with their antlers for free!  If you are lucky enough to get an antler given to you just have your human cut it into pieces on a saw and you will be set with chews for a long time.

We are just about six weeks away from the 2012 National and I am very excited about going this year.  I hear there is going to be a Parade of Veterans along with the parade of Champions and Castaways.  Diane Harris is organizing the Parade of Veterans and I’m hoping she puts together those great bags for us again.  Last year I got an airbed which I love to nap on in the sun.  So if any of you are tossing around the idea of entering any of the parades I highly recommend it.  Everybody has a good time and we all get to strut our stuff whether we are Champions, Veterans or just a humble rescue dog like me.  We all get a moment of pride and glory as we go around the ring and our story is read.  So if you can get away come to Lancaster PA and join the fun and exceitment.

Speaking of humble rescue dogs I would just like to spend a couple of minutes talking about rescue and shelter dogs.  This year is starting off with a bang, for dogs needing to come into rescue.  Right now we have a 7 month-old at our home that was turned into a shelter because they didn’t have time to train him.  This little guy is great he gets along with everyone and he is so happy to just have a friend to play with.  He sure makes everyone here smile.  But, the sad facts are we have already had to put dogs on a waiting list to come into to rescue due to the lack of foster homes.  I am sending out a plea.  If anyone feels they have the room and the time please consider fostering a Schipperke.  Even if you can only take on one it is one more that can come into a rescue program to be rehomed.  I know a lot of you folks do many things to assist with rescue from monetary support to transports etc. and it is a lot to ask someone to take on another dog but if you can please contact the Schipperke Rescue closest to you and volunteer you will be rewarded in butt wags and Schippie kisses.            My internal clock is telling me it is cookie time and then it’s off for another nap in the sun.  I will be looking forward to seeing you in PA this spring!  So till next, time remember to never skip your afternoon nap and keep a close watch on the cookie jar.~Skippy~
